    1. Key take-homes from the group work on multi-stakeholder value addition and priority livestock-based solutions
Collated by PB based on the originals below
The power of multi-stakeholder actions. They:
Contribute to improved communication and coordination; wider sharing of research and innovation findings; improved community engagement
Mobilize multiple perspectives on solutions; lead to multi-perspective solutions: Different stakeholders can work to achieve the SDG’s in different ways, with wider impact
Create shared values and strategies [by enhancing understanding of the values of others]
Contribute to benefit sharing and equity along the value chain [by engaging the whole chain]
    Ensure no SDG left behind
The sustainability of livestock-based solutions. Enabled by:
Community-based interventions; Farmer-centric approach; Investments adapted to specific livestock systems
Sharing of good practices and upscaling; Recording lessons learnt and fingers burnt
Appropriate livestock-based policy framework; Public policy that contributes to livestock development; Country strategies for foreign (public) investment for livestock; Development of national policies and strategies for management of change in livestock sector (focusing on sustainability).
Development and strengthening [local] public-private platforms
Capacity building on innovations and technologies
    Market-oriented approaches

In the policy forum we heard about many exciting developments in Ethiopia’s livestock sector around commercialization and the live export market. But we also know that livestock are central to the livelihoods of the many smallholder farmers and pastoralists in Ethiopia who depend up them. This meeting has shown the need to balance commercialization with the transformation of rural livelihoods, especially those of women and youth in order to achieve the multiple benefits that livestock can deliver in meeting the SDG’s.

    On SDGs
SDG’s are a good convergence for the many stakeholders
    ...
Need simple visuals for globalization of tools for all stakeholders (this is needed for easy and rapid uptake – smallholder to execute
    Different assessment methodologies:
    o BecauseBecause needs opinions
Multi stakeholder methods effective in models and tools but need to distinguish when used to initial discussion and when used to find solutions

Yesterday we benefited from exchanges with policy experts from other African countries in the Regional Policy Forum. These exchanges will help all of the countries represented to develop policies which will transform the livestock sector regardless of where in the world we are.

    participants and GASL?GASL
    collated by PB:
    On SDGs
SDG’s are a good convergence for the many stakeholders
We have seen the relevance of livestock in SDGs. Meeting has demonstrated this - how to make all these knowledge and experience available outside livestock sector (key)
Need to highlight livestock roles in food security, nutrition and incomes
    On tools and cases
Great to see enthusiasm in presenting case studies - difficult to integrate into specific measures
Exposure to many tools, but their best application not clear.
No single answer to questions on livestock sector that we have.
Rich mix of methodologies - Let is keep it simple. And make explanations easy
    On GASL participation
We are missing out by not looking at commercial investors to see benefit of livestock sector. Hardly heard about extension role in livestock development
What the interest for a farmer to be here? No SDG in the farm. We need concrete discussions with farmers
The voice of the beneficiaries is lacking…farmers etc are not adequately representation
Need to increase private sector participation who are key to making solitons sustainable.
This is a Forum for believers in livestock, we need to also consider including the non-believers in livestock.
    On GASL
GASL to capitalize and disseminate lessons and insights
GASL platform is now mature enough to begin influencing policies. We need to pay attention to policymakers’ demands and what we want to get out of our discussions.
The GASL enables joined up work with researchers and others…to help mainstream our impacts.
People now keen to see what they can do for GASL
Action networks are highways for impact
    Much progress since GASL Ottawa.
GASL the most comprehensive forum for livestock stakeholders to share and collaborate.
