Outline of the session

This session will provide an intro to some of the theory underpinning instructional design and adult learning, and provide an example of how these principles were used when redesigning an intervention (FEAST) aimed at improving feed utilization and animal production.

To consider the potential of Instructional Design best practice to meet our collective capacity development challenges


By the end of the session, each participant who brings to the session a capacity development challenge/question will :

1. have asked and clarified the questions related to his/her own capacity development challenge that will enable him/her to design an appropriate instructional design strategy;

2. have reflected on the application of instructional design principles to his/her challenge;

3. have benefited from the collective inputs of the group on their challenge/question.

Detailed session outline:
1. Shared Training Challenges
In trios or quartets:
  • What is the purpose of training in your organization? How is it delivered + organized?
  • What do you do to make trainings effective?
  • What makes that hard to do all of the time? What constraints do you face in training others?
  • Is there anyone in the sector that seems to deliver well designed trainings effortlessly? What does he/she do?
  • Any ideas now emerging?

2. Micro-TedTalk on Instructional Design
In groups of 1, then 2, then 4:
  • Alone (1 min) -What did the presenter say?
  • Pairs (2 min) -What are the implications for our work?
  • Quartets (4 min) -Were there any gaps that we need to ask Deborah questions about?

3. Helping Each Other with Challenges
Four to six volunteers (the Clients) that have a training related challenge. Other participants divide up into roving consulting teams.
  • 1 min to describe challenge, 1 min for consultants to ask clarifying questions, client to turn their back to give opportunity for 3-4 minutes of design advice, question storming (identify unanswered questions), reflective synthesis (reflecting on own experience if relevant)
  • Consulting teams rotate to next station
  • Clients to report on major take homes.

4. Reflection on Our Discussions
  • Alone (1 min): Where do you see opportunities to apply ID immediately? What’s your first move? What weak signals will you be watching for that let you know you are making progress?
  • Pairs (2 mins): Share
  • Quartets (4 mins): Refine, synthesize and capitalize
